Shanghai-ed In Portland {format} 7:15 Dmae Roberts

A descent into the "Shanghai Tunnels" underneath Portland, Oregon, where "shanghai-ed" men were held before being forced to work on ships for no pay. Shangahai-ing started in 1850 and fizzled out by 1941, the start of World War II. "Now, the first thing the shanghai-ers would do when they grabbed you, was take your shoes, because they broke glass and spread it throughout the underground, so if you escaped, you couldn’t run too fast or too far." Crypto-Jews or hidden Jews are Sephaerdic Jews who emigrated to Mexico and other parts of Latin America to escape the Inquisition in the 1500’s. Many Latinos don’t even know their Jewish origins even though they might speak Ladino (mixture of Hebrew and Portugese and Spanish) and use Jewish chants in what they thought were exclusively Catholic services. Kathleen Alcala stumbled upon her Jewish origins and wrote Spirits of the Ordinary, a novel about her family history -- now a play in Portland. [transcript]

At riding stables across the country, kids with disabilities are working with horses in a new kind of therapy that’s both physical and emotional. there are about 650 riding centers in the U.S. and Canada that offer therapeutic horse riding to more than 30,000 people with disabilities. One such rider is eight-year-old Grace Kurlychek who rides her horse Dove at Ride-Able in Eugene, Oregon. More at Stories1st. [transcript]
