A Fuller Web: Books/Tapes/Links

You've just had a brush with the Fuller man, not to be confused with the Fuller Brush man. Healthy minds will no doubt have questions, objections, maybe even think he's a wacko dreamer. Check him out yourself.
Many of the quotes used here are from Critical Path (1980, St. Martin's Press; the Introduction is the most concise summation of his ideas I've ever read) and I Seem To Be A Verb (1970, out-of-print). Another great book is Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth (1969, Southern Illinois University Press).
The web is packed with Fullerian files:

By permission, this web-presentation also used excerpts from a Michael Toms' talk with Bucky on New Dimensions Radio (1984, "Around the Universe", tape #1606). Those wild New Dimensional folk have several excellent interviews with Bucky.

Fuller devotees should definitely peruse the wares and reads of the Buckminster Fuller Institute (Sebastopol CA).

There's a wonderful web companion site to the WNET-TV show "Thinking Out Loud." They interview John Cage, Merce Cunningham, architect Phillip Johnson, and filmmaker Authur Penn. Concise essays are here on Geodesic Domes, the Dymaxion Map, and all-things-Bucky.

The R. Buckminster Fuller FAQ, maintained by Chris Fearnley, compiles the knowledge from several listservs into a linked list of Fullerian info.

The Fuller Map, by Paul Taylor, ``interconnects ideas and designs which were scattered throughout a series of books, allowing a labyrinthine journey through the complex realm of Fuller's work."

The World Game Institute's ``mission is to supply the perspective and information needed to solve the critical problems facing global society of the twenty-first century." It really is based on a game devised by Fuller in which players allocate the world's resources. The goal: ``to make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological damage or the disadvantage of anyone." Start a war and you lose.

GENI are the keepers of the Global Energy Grid resources and projects: increase everyone's standard of living, reduce fossil fuel demand and the resultant pollution, relieve the population explosion, reduce world hunger, reduce deforestation, topsoil loss, and spreading of deserts, enhance world trade, promote international cooperation and peace.

If you want to explore "the coordinates of Universe,", the entire two volume tome is at: Synergetics; Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking.

And Amy Edmondson also has, A Fuller Explanation, The Synergetic Geometry of R. Buckminster Fuller (it's the entire book online). Ms. Edmondson is one of the voices in "The Artifacts of Buckminster Fuller."

Richard Hawkins has quite the collection of quicktime animations based on "Synergetic Geometry," including such moving phenomena as the Tensegrity Jitterbug, the Tensegrity Amoeba, and the Spinning Buckyball.

Kirby Urner's Synergetics on the Web is one of the original, and still one of the best Bucky e-sources.

Another old favorite is Chris Rywalt's The Bucky Fuller Travelling Miracle Medicine Show. (he also designed the Dymaxion Map animation.)

Joe Moore's Buckminster Fuller Virtual Institute has an comprehensive bibliography of articles, books, audio and video.

Dr. Donald Ingber, another "Artifacts" voice, ``discovered that living cells use a form of geodesic architecture." He founded Molecular Geodesics, Inc. ``to develop Biomimetics, which creates breakthrough advances in material, device, and manufacturing process design through biological mimicry." He expands ideas on tensegrity and ``the design of organic structures" in his Scientific American article "The Architecture of Life."

More info on "Artifacts" interviewees: Amy Edmondson, E. J. Applewhite, Donald Ingber, Kenneth Snelson, Andrew Culver, John Cage, J. Baldwin.
